Parallels 17 also contains a virtual TPM (Trusted Platform Module) chip, which lets the system use BitLocker and Secure Boot when running Windows 10 and Windows 11. The ability to drag and drop between Windows and Mac apps has been improved, as well - for example, you can now highlight and drop text and images between Mac and Windows apps, and it'll work with the new Quick Note feature coming to macOS Monterey. Now, things like shutdowns, updates and sign-in screens are windowed as well, making them easier to pop into the background. Parallels improved its "Coherence" mode, where you can run a Windows app without launching into the full Windows UI. There are a handful of new features on board, as well. These tests are all run by Parallels, and we can't verify them yet, but improving performance has long been a focus for the company. M1-specific speed improvements include 20 percent faster disk performance when using Windows 10 Insider preview, while DirectX graphics should perform up to 28 percent better. Regardless of which system you're using, Parallels 17 resumes Windows and Linux up to 38 percent faster, while OpenGL graphics run up to six times faster than the previous version. Microsoft's built-in emulation for Windows means that Windows 10 Insider Preview can run almost any 32-bit x86 app as well as "many" 64-bit x86 apps, and the M1's power helps to make up for speed lost due to emulation.Īs for what's new, Parallels has speed improvements across the board, whether you're running Intel or M1. So while Intel Macs still offer the broadest compatibility, Parallels has found that the raw power of the M1 chip means users likely aren't giving anything up running the Windows 10 or 11 Insider Previews. It officially supports 12 different Linux distros, while M1 Macs can only virtualize four right now (including Ubuntu and Fedora). On an Intel-based Mac, however, users can still run a host of virtual machines, including Windows support all the way back to XP and Windows 2000, and macOS all the way back to 2011's OS X Lion. But, Parallels unequivocally says that when the full version of Windows 11 is released to the public, it'll run on Parallels 17. As of today, the only versions of Windows that Parallels can run on an M1 Mac are the Insider Previews for Windows 10 and Windows 11 - because those versions of the OS are able to run on ARM-based hardware. Apple moving the Mac to ARM architecture means there are now two classes of Macs for Parallels to support. Now, Parallels Desktop 17 is being released with improved performance on M1 Macs, as well as full support for the upcoming macOS Monterey and Windows 11 operating systems.īefore getting into these improvements, though, it's worth taking a moment to talk compatibility. In addition to building a version of Parallels that can run on Chrome OS for the first time, the company also had to figure out how to quickly make its software work with the new, ARM-based M1 Macs that arrived last fall. Parallels, the company best known for its virtualization software that lets you run Windows and Linux directly on your Mac, has had a busy year.

Matheson recounts that the episode was at one point to have been helmed by Jacques Tourneur, the great director of Out of the Past and Cat People, and no stranger to making the most of deep shadows and a limited budget. It’s a brilliantly executed installment that could have taken on a different form. The final twist is that there is no twist. Then, in the last shot, after the plane has landed, the episode proves him right, revealing the damage he thought he saw the gremlin wreaking to have been real all along. But it also feels like the only move he has left if he wants to save the plane and, in the process, prove his sanity. When Bill, gun in hand, breaks a window and collapses the divide between the two, it’s shocking. He makes particularly good use of the contrast between the darkness and bad weather outside and the brightly illuminated sterility of the airplane interior. Then just starting out - in the next decade he’d go on to direct The Omen and Superman - Donner demonstrates a lot of technical expertise in the episode, turning the confined space of the airplane cabin into a pressure cooker as Bill becomes increasingly desperate. Yet even if the gremlin’s seemingly magical movements were the result of the limitations of a network TV budget, director Richard Donner made its dreamlike qualities part of the episode’s atmosphere. What’s more, the gremlin seems to float away as if powered by fairy dust or, well, the kind of wires used in television productions. Or maybe not.ĭoes he see a monster on the wing? We see it, but the episode withholds any kind of confirmation that we’re not just seeing the creature - a gremlin like pilots described seeing during World War II, by Bob’s reckoning - through Bob’s unreliable eyes. He’s traveling with his wife, Ruth (Christine White), who’s come to retrieve him from a treatment center where he’s been recuperating under a doctor’s care. A key contributor to The Twilight Zone, Matheson adapted the episode himself, and the script wisely puts as much emphasis on Bob’s mounting psychological distress as it does on the monster driving it. I looked out the window and said, ‘Jeez, what if I saw a guy out there?’”įrom that thought sprung Matheson’s short story “Nightmare at 20,000 Feet,” first published in 1961. Speaking to Marc Scott Zicree for the invaluable book The Twilight Zone Companion, writer Richard Matheson said, “I was on an airplane. When anyone else looks, they see nothing at all. The premise of the episode is simple: When Bob looks outside, he sees a monster. But what matters is that it terrifies the episode’s hero, Bob Wilson (played as one giant raw nerve by William Shatner), a man taking his first flight after having suffered a nervous breakdown - on a plane. The gremlin in the original episode looks a bit like an oversized teddy bear left in the wash too long. Okay, “worst nightmares” might be something of an exaggeration. Imagine the horror of looking out and seeing a creature out of your worst nightmares waiting there. It’s ridiculous, of course, the idea of a creature walking on the wing of an airplane and wreaking havoc. “Nightmare” has endured in the culture for the last 55 years in part because it doubles as such an effective shorthand for a fear of flying. The third episode of The Twilight Zone’s fifth and final season, it’s since become one of the series’ most acclaimed outings, as well as the inspiration for one of the premiere episode of CBS All Access’s new Jordan Peele-hosted Twilight Zone reboot. “Nightmare at 20,000 Feet” first aired on October 11, 1963. Throw in, say, a malevolent monster seemingly determined to bring down the plane, a monster only you can see, and even teeth-gritting doesn’t cut it. No matter how many reassuring statistics you read about the safety of air travel, it’s still a leap of faith to step into a heavy machine that doesn’t look like it can fly and hope for the best, sometimes through gritted teeth. Some of the most effective Twilight Zone episodes made an already scary scenario even scarier. A ventriloquist’s dummy is naturally creepy, so what if it really did come to life? Con artists prosper, so if a bunch of friendly-seeming aliens showed up, who’s to say we wouldn’t see through their scams? The classic Rod Serling–created series specialized in stories just askew from reality, tales of the uncanny that felt like situations an ordinary person could stumble into with a few wrong turns. One reason The Twilight Zone works so well is that it always feels just a couple of steps removed from the reality we know. I'm the only guy she has ever been with until this happened. I'm just confused as to why and how she did it 4 times. But she did say that it was mutually agreed and it took "two to tango". Now I will say she travels a lot for work and this happened at a conference in Miami, where she says she felt flattered by him (she's known him about a year), and she thinks he was pursuing her. Why I was confused by that is because the most she has ever done with me was twice in one day. What has blown me away and left me confused though is that she told me she and the other man had sex 4 times in about 4 hours during this night. She explained that there isn't a relationship there, and she even was at a conference the next week and the guy happened to be there too, but she said it was done. This type of affair is usually unplanned and is usually due to an impulsive decision in which one was lost in the moment. She explained to me that she was buzzed, but was totally coherrent, but it was just a one off and she doesn't even know why she did it. A one night stand can be considered an impulsive and regrettable reaction. We have never watched porn or cheated on one another. I mean we have sex about every 5 days but we do experiment with positions and what not but she isn't like a total freak or anything. She never has before and is actually very conservative in that department anyway. I was completely shocked because she is the last person I would have ever thought to actually do that. We discussed it all afternoon and have since talked about it many times since. Bettys not my girlfriend we had a one-night stand, thats all. Hope this information just cleared things up a bit. Sadly, if you dont have an older version of the Sims 3 I really dont think there is a way to avoid it. There should obviously be a choice, but there was not. My bet is that the newer/most recent copies have a file that prompts us to install the game using Origin. As I type this it is installing without origin. After trying to bypass this for an hour I gave up and went in search of my old copy of the sims 3. But no, origin forces us to download it via them. WTH, why? I have the disk, it should only take 15 minutes to install. SO when I went to install the new Sims 3 Starter Pack it forced me to use origin. I had deleted the older version of the Sims 3 a couple of years ago. Today I bought the Sims 3 Started Pack which included the base game (the sims 3) plus Late Night, and High-End Loft Stuff. Luckly I had an older realsed version of the sims 3 from 2010. I may recommend getting a console as SecuROM isn't going away any time soon. Actually all in all I've had very few problems with SecuROM. The latest iteration of Tomb Raider is download only. As the internet becomes a more integral part of peoples lives more and more games will be distributed online only and as cloud computing becomes standard (yes I feel it will) we will be downloading clients instead of the whole game. SecuROM was introduced with Bioshock disc version so it is not reserved for just digital download versions. It has been said that SecuROM reactivates periodically but this hasn't been confirmed. SecuROM imposes an install limit (activations) and HAS to be activated by an online server the first time the game is played. The disc version only has copyguard and there is no install limit. This started a problem as Steam wanted EA to remove the drm and this started a big problem with Steam versions of TS3 because Steam games install different then Origin games. The digital download version of TS3 ALWAYS had SecuROM when bought from EA or other EA resellers. I have done this for my friend as her launcher has been broken from day one.Īll did was re-name it to "play sims 3" that way when I search for my ts3.exe file I didn't have to see two of them while searching. You can always go into the bin file and copy and past your ts3.exe file to the desk top. If you want to by pass the launcher than do this: You can play offline by logging yourself or at the launcher or at the game menu. This is the Cumulative manual update for the PC: Official EA Download Link for The Sims 3 *Cumulative* Manual Update XML for the PCĪnd this is the cumulative manual update for MAC: Official EA Download Links for The Sims 3 *Cumulative* Manual Update for the MACĪlso, you don't technically have to be online on origin to play offline on the sims.īut the best thing that I can suggest to you is to go through the process at least to get yourself set up, your games registered and all that mumbo jumbo, an after all that, you should be able to play without having to log into origin. Though if you would like to update through manual patches these are the ones you would be looking at when ever there is a new patch, they always update these links with the new patch: Origin is also how you get most of your updates. Well, the big plus to having the origin is, if you ever lose your cpy of your game, you can digitally download it again though origin. (There are no rewards after the first three times the player wins a game.) There is also a bar where any player who is wearing a Pirate Hat, Eye Patch, or Deluxe Pirate Hat is given Mead once a day. It can be accessed at any time once Island Southeast is available, and on non-rainy and even-numbered days of the season there are visiting pirates after 8pm. There is a hidden entrance on the east side of Island Southeast that leads to the Pirate Cove. The player can open/close the resort for the following day with the toggle located between the two doors of the changing room.Īfter opening the beach resort, Gus will run a bar on the days when he visits. Upon returning to the beach a Magma Sprite appears and leads the player north to the Volcano. Interactions in Leo's hut remove the turtle blocking the northern exit. The player must follow Leo who appears and runs into the jungle in Island East. Initially, two large turtles block the paths to Island North and Island West. If the festival is held on the beach, the player will be deposited on the bridge leading to the beach south of Pelican Town. They will usually arrive back inside the Fish Shop, except on festival days when the path back to the Farm is blocked, in which case the player will be deposited on the Bus Stop instead. The player can return to Stardew Valley at any time for free by entering the boat on the southern beach. The first time the player rides the boat, a cutscene triggers where other islands can be seen from the boat on the way there. Ginger Island is the only island available to visit in the archipelago. Purchasing a ticket to ride the boat costs 1,000g and includes the return trip. It can be accessed after repairing the boat in the back room of Willy’s Fish Shop. Ginger Island is an island in the Fern Islands archipelago. I offer that assessment before telling you the record’s title, because it’s a doozy: I like it when you sleep, for you are so beautiful yet so unaware of it. Their majestic second album cleared up the confusion and revealed them to be a smarter and more imaginative band than most people believed. The 1975’s hooky, self-titled 2013 debut won them a fan base in the U.K., but it was more surface than depth songs like “Sex,” “Girls,” and “M.O.N.E.Y.” were catchy, but it wasn’t always clear whether they were critiquing rock stardom or desperately courting it. At least modern life was rubbish 25 years ago too.īoth bands got off to artistically inauspicious starts. Like Oasis’s great ’90s rivals before them, the 1975 are a Brit-pop band fascinated by a sometimes-indifferent America, Trying To Say Something About Modern Life, occasionally tripping over their own grandeur, but making up for it all by being more ambitious and talented than nearly all of their immediate peers. Their bright, emotive, freewheeling sound has drawn comparisons to bands as disparate as INXS and Panic! at the Disco, but five years into their recording career, the band they most remind me of-in spirit if not sound-is Blur. The 1975 are a group of four longtime pals from Manchester, England: frontman Healy, guitarist Adam Hann, bassist Ross MacDonald, and drummer George Daniel. Right now, for example, in a moment that will have long become obsolete by the time you’re reading this, news about Kawhi Leonard’s New Balance endorsement, information about serial sexual predator Jeffrey Epstein, and the fact that it is #NationalFrenchToastDay are all presented to me in the same sidebar, in the same-sized font, in a sequential manner that cannot possibly be good for my cognitive health. You can, of course, probably write your own equally discomfiting “Love It If We Made It” verse at any moment of the day, just by singing the topics trending side-by-side on Twitter. “How weird is reality?”įor modern people who spend more of their time than they’d like staring at screens, the 1975’s expansive third album, A Brief Inquiry Into Online Relationships, out Friday, might hit a little too close to home. “That is the song in its essence,” Healy recently said. The song would be too bleak without it, but the tension between these two moods creates something that’s both clear-eyed and hopeful. The saving grace is that chorus, a kaleidoscopic explosion of glimmering pop that hits like a firework. And so meme language (“poison me, daddy”) is juxtaposed with references to the refugee crisis (“a beach of drowning 3-year-olds”) Trump and Kanye are evoked alongside Jesus, all in a patter that’s a little bit Jenny Holzer, a little bit “We Didn’t Start the Fire.” It’s flat, unsettling, and decontextualized-and that’s the point, because so is life right now. Modernity indeed! The original idea was to make a song entirely derived from tabloid headlines, Healy told Pitchfork, but he granted himself a bit of poetic license to make it all more pointed and affecting. Healy wrote it in bits and pieces over the past two or so years-as an underqualified bully has become the leader of the free world and the average person is bombarded daily with ever-worsening news about the future inhabitability of Earth. This song is one for the time capsule, though the open question of whether anyone will be around to discover it is one of its animating and quintessentially millennial anxieties. It’ll have been two years since we played a show when we start playing. The 1975 Are in Their Feelings on Their Latest Singles “The weirdest part about this experience is you put out a record normally and you’re immediately on tour. “I am slightly terrified, to be real, because I did it for three years straight really before the pandemic, and I got really good at it," she said at the time. Before hitting the road, the singer-songwriter admitted she was a little scared to tour again. The show marked the last stop on Bridgers' Reunion Tour. Over the summer, Healy revealed he was "making another ‘classic record,’" so maybe we'll hear recorded versions of those new songs sooner rather than later. Her friend and The 1975 singer Matty Healy surprised the crowd with an acoustic opening set where he debuted two new songs (one that was “a new song about the love of my life” and one called "New York") as well as "Be My Mistake" off the band's 2018 album A Brief Inquiry Into Online Relationships and 2013's "Sex." Healy fittingly ended his set by bringing out "the woman of the hour" to sing their collaboration "Jesus Christ 2005 God Bless America," which is featured on The 1975's latest album Notes On A Conditional Form. trust me” ahead of her set at Los Angeles' Greek Theater, she wasn't kidding. When Phoebe Bridgers tweeted “come early tonight. It’s a standard arcade trick, but one that doesn’t do well when you’re at home on a console and have the time to sit and play through large numbers of levels. Even if you save your lady, she is captured again as you escape, and you are forced to play through a more difficult version of the same levels. Simply enough, it’s too repetitive to be much fun for long. The Legend of Kage is certainly an entertaining game for a while, namely due to its speedy acrobatics, but it certainly isn’t the best ninja game. After a while you’ll be speeding through your enemies, slashing as you pass and just waiting to get somewhere or for something new to happen. If I’d known about mastering the eventual ability to create personal black holes, I might have invested in a Tai-Kwon-Do class.Įxcept for the larger stars, you will never upgrade your weapons or your character, which also adds to the repetition. Powerups come in the form of spheres that change your costume color and give you more powerful stars, a few random appearances of a mushroom-looking thing that gives you the ability to shoot stars in all directions, and a strange badge or leaf that casts a limited spell that sucks ninjas to you and kills them. Since everyone, even you, dies in one hit this makes the enemy group noticeably lacking. There are some color changes that denote skill, but that is all the variety you will see. You will only encounter three basic types of enemies – a guy that uses his sword, a guy that throws stars, and a magician that shoots fireballs. Yet just like Kung Fu, Kage is highly repetitive. )Ĭompared to Kung Fu, both games have the same essential gameplay, but Kage retains freedom of movement and classic style. ( You cannot overcome my infinitive Dragon Sword. You can throw stars in all directions and run, climb, and leap with ease. Control, as said before, is simple and easy to handle. Thunder crashes in the background, fireballs sizzle as they pass, the clink of swords clashing together is easy to pick up on. Kage’s sound is a strong point however, with a simple but unobtrusive oriental background theme and sound effects that are few, but are used effectively. A ninja does look like a ninja, and a tree does look like a tree, but neither are spectacularly amazing. Indoor areas mostly have one color for wallpaper. You will usually see trees in the foreground and slightly unfocused, blue-shaded trees in the background. Kage’s characters look like ones from an Atari game, and the backgrounds are sparse and generally barren. The graphics in the game are simple, and probably the game’s weakest technical point. Your enemies never stay on the ground for long either, so most of your battles will take place in midair or in the rare moments when you and your foes are on terra firma. But it’s this leaping ability that makes the game so unique. You will eventually need to kill some enemies to proceed, with their numbers tracked either at the bottom of the screen or in a fixed number of stronger “boss” characters, so you can’t simply climb a tree and dodge ninjas like you’d dodge a bear. You’ll actually be able to make it through most of the game this way, by simply leaping from tree to tree. You can also speedily climb trees and walls with this button before gliding through the air again. Holding down the button allows you to glide up effortlessly past the height of most trees and land gracefully on their branches. Jumping is achieved through use of the up button, and here’s where things start to get crazy. One button swings your razor sword, one button tosses out a throwing star from an infinite supply, though only two stars may be on the screen at a time. A very limited selection of this kind of awesome is what you’ll be doing in this game.Ĭontrols are fairly simple. The kinds where actors are doing wire-work every other scene, allowing them to run along treetops and up walls while trading skillful sword slices. Where Kage differs from both is in its homage to classic oriental kung fu movies, the same ones that Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon took its style from. Its premise is simple and its action unrelenting. Legend of Kage has more in common with the classic Kung Fu than with Ninja Gaiden or other similar titles. ( I will now combat you to avenge the kill of my fathers. It’s a lame excuse for some martial arts action, and this is in no way a deep game anyway. You are Kage, a fearsome ninja, and a group of evil ninjas captures your girlfriend. The Legend of Kage starts out like reading a page from the Videogame Plot Handbook. Its arcade action is fast and unforgiving and its acrobatics quite enjoyable, two things that set it apart from other titles. It’s another ninja action side-scroller, but a very unique one. This is a title most of you probably have never heard of. The title was announced in the opening ceremony of the developer's February 2021 annual convention. The two core principles for the remaster were preserving the authentic, original game's experience and making it accessible for modern play. Some new conveniences, like the latter, can be toggled to the user's playstyle preference. The remaster includes some small usability changes like the Shared Stash and automatic gold pickup. While the developers did not make even minor changes to core gameplay, they upgraded the game's visuals, modeling its remastered graphics on art from the original game. The remaster's design philosophy required the game to be identical to what legacy players remembered. After assessing what was missing Blizzard decided they had enough to proceed with the remaster, with capabilities to recreate any missing assets and redraw the existing assets in higher definition with help of the original artists and animators from the game. Their team scoured through other sources at Blizzard, such as through marketing material, to find additional resources to fill in the gaps. However, according to Blizzard's current Diablo lead Rod Fergusson and principal designer Rob Gallerani, the missing data was not as bad as the Schaefers had implied. They were able to recover most of the code and assets through copies that employees of Blizzard North had taken home with them or other means, but the Schaefers felt there were still too many pieces missing to fully remaster the game. ĭuring a 2019 media event, Max Schaefer, Erich Schaefer, and David Brevik stated they had been unsure if a remaster of Diablo II was possible due to a near-release loss of much of the game's source code and assets from corruption in their backup system. Brack said this move was due to Vicarious having detailed knowledge of the Diablo series by this point, so that they could not only continue to provide support for Resurrected but also for Diablo IV and other Blizzard properties. About a month before the February 2021 announcement of the game, Activision announced that Vicarious Visions had been transferred and moved into Blizzard's corporate structure. Allen Brack, Vicarious Visions was responsible for handling the front-end and 3D client while Blizzard handled the back-end server and integration aspects of the remaster. Main articles: Diablo II § Plot, and Diablo II: Lord of Destruction § Plotĭiablo II: Resurrected has the same plot as the original game.ĭiablo II: Resurrected 's development began around 2019, as a joint effort between Blizzard's Diablo team (Team 3) and Vicarious Visions, at the time a subsidiary under Blizzard's corporate sibling Activision. Unlike the original Diablo II, Resurrected allows the secret cow level, also known as the Moo Moo Farm, to be infinitely repeatable by players. The remaster allows players to import save files from the original Diablo II in local single-player and continue from that point. The game now reminds players to spend skill points and reminds that skill point allocation is permanent. Players can toggle automatic gold pickup, display ground items and other small upgrades. The addition of a Shared Stash lets players transfer items between their own characters, as compared with the original game, which involved a tertiary "mule" character to facilitate the transfer. īlizzard added small convenience upgrades while leaving the core gameplay unchanged. Resurrected supports 4K graphics resolution and 7.1 Dolby Surround sound. Resurrected overlays upgraded 3D models atop the original Diablo II 's 2D sprites, and is designed to toggle between the legacy and upgraded visuals with a button press. The remaster mainly updates the original game's graphics and network functions and does not change any of its item systems or game balance. |
